Celebrating Gandhi through true Gandhians - Prakash and Mandakini Amte
As a homage to completing 150 years of Gandhi's life, I wanted to recognize four people who I met who represent Gandhian values – from the four corners of India. To start with the west of India, I want to recognize Dr. Prakash and Dr. Mandakini Amte, who I met, thanks to my friend Kiran Khalap. While both Prakash and Mandakini work together, my interview was only with Prakash for strictly logistical reasons. I was glad that Mandakini was in the audience when I interviewed him and this is a homage to both of them.
West – Prakash and Mandakini Amte, Doctors with a Purpose Given their simplicity, dedication, and sense of humor; this Magsaysay award and ICMR Lifetime Achievement Award recipients from Bill Gates are the most unassuming people I ever met. They provide medical services to the tribals in the Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra. Their home is open to experts from across the globe, to wild animals and grandchildren. Both their sons became doctors and married doctors and all four of them work with him and his wife.
Prakash’s father Baba Amte was also a Magsaysay-award-winning social entrepreneur and Prakash and the next generation of Amtes continue the tradition. We are proud to have Sheetal Amte of the next generation as an INK Fellow and to continue our relationship with the Amte clan.
